Well, I'm on a roll now...my son said that making YouTube video's was addicting. This garland looks really nice hanging in my schoolroom. The kids are older but still appreciate my efforts...really I do it just as much for myself. The crafter kid in me just cant help it.
UGH! I'm trying to use the Picasa editor and its not working. But wanted to share what I'v been up to with my shabby chic room. So please forgive the photo.
I have had this green and cream polka-dot fabric for years. Finally working up the courage to get the sewing machine dusted off this bed skirt was the results.
Not only is the skirt new...but a few other things that you cant see, I found heated mattress pad covers at a deep discount. And everyone got one for their beds...so warm and toasty. At the same sale I found cold weather comforters, There's nothing like a bed that is made for sleeping. I have a few more things on there way to add to our yummy cozy beds. We may never get out of them.

OK not the best photo...I should have put it in a smaller bowl, these bowls are huge so you cant really fill them up. This is a yum-yum-yummy soup and very quick to put together. I like to use organic non GMO products but that's up to you. The reason this is vegetarian and not vegan is that Quorn uses eggs in there meatless meat products.

INGREDIENTS
1 box of Organic Vegetable broth
1 can organic black beans
1 cup organic corn (Trader Joes has organic corn...very hard to find)
1 diced tomato peeled (or 1small can)
1 Bag of Quorn Chik'n Tenders
1/2 t zesty spice mix (Kroger had a good one or you can make your own)
1 T Lime juice
1 jalapeno diced very tiny
five shakes of hot sauce
Some organic Nacho chips

PUTTING IT TOGETHER
Throw everything in the pot but the nachos. Bring it to a boil if you want to kick up the heat taste wise GO FOR IT. Turn it down to a simmer and let it cook about 10 minutes. Serve up in bowls and toss the chips on at the last minute so they don't get all soggy. If you want serve it with graded cheese and sour cream...but I enjoy it just as it is.

This recipe is tasty not hot and really good for a cold.

(1) #16008 Kelly Green

(1) #16851 Green Shimmer

(1) 16007 Cocoa Brown

I purchased a cheap frame with glass. (then I accidentally broke the glass and had to get new glass)

I took the liner in the frame...you know the paper that backs the glass and has the price and a picture of overly happy people.I flipped it over a drew a grid. Make sure you can hang your frame without wires going across the back and it will be secure on the window.

I found a picture of inspiration online and printed it, then drew a grid over that. NOTE: You have to have the same number of squares on your inspiration picture you printed and the paper liner. The squares will not be the same size you just have to have the same number of squares.

Once the grid was drawn out I then started drawing in the flowers, leaves, stems and such. Taking each box at a time. I did not do an identical copy I left something's out and added flowers, leaves and stems as I saw fit. I colored in the leaves and flowers with colored markers as I went (do not use crayons they will stick to the back side of your glass) The lines can get really jumbled to the eye and coloring it helps visualize the patter and make adjustments. And its easier to follow when coloring with the liquid glass.

With that finished I put the paper and glass back in the frame facing the front with the glass on top. This kept me from having to tape the paper onto the glass and kept it stable and easy to work with. It also showed me where I had to stop at the edge.

Now I traced my black lines with the liquid leading. If you make a blob DO NOT WIPE IT let it dry and continue on. You can come back to your blobs and neaten them up with the exacto knife just cut out what you don't want. You can peel this stuff off...so if you make a mistake just let it dry and peel it away.

Once the lives were traced I started coloring in...this was the fun part. In the clear area I marbled clear frost and snow white, I wanted it more opaque. Then with my roses I did marbling on each leaf with two or more of snow white, Rosy Pink and Magenta rose. The leaves were marbled with Kelly Green and Green Shimmer. The stems were Cocoa Brown I made it thicker in some parts this gave the illusion of shading.

NOTE: put it on thick and take it all the way to the leading. If you feel its too thin you can put a second coat on. BUBBLES: Don't go too fast you will have too many bubbles, you can pop the bubbles with the tip of the bottle or a tooth pick.

DRYING: I laid it flat every night since I put it on so thick. But if you are doing it directly on a window apply it thinner and add another coat to darken it up if you want.

I think I covered everything if you have any questions please leave a comment or e-mail me.

There are several ways to purchase Gallery Glass first just order it on amazon by clicking the link below. They way I did it...being frugal.. was use coupons or apps at Hobby lobby. This meant I had to buy one at a time as you can only use one coupon per person per visit. But to make it easier I took my kids handed each a coupon, bottle and some cash.

In total for the frame and 8 Gallery Glass bottles ( not including the new glass and I already had the other supplies) I spent $44.02. To purchase from amazon would be $51.44 without shipping and without the frame. The frame was 50% off, Hobby Lobby puts their frames on sale all the time.

OK I have a new friend that is showing me the ropes as a savings queen, I would say a coupon queen but its more than just clipping coupons. Let me show you why.

At Target today I purchased 2 bags of Iams Original cat food, 1 Arm and Hammer Clump & Seal cat litter, 1 Party Mix cat treats and 14 cans for Iams wet cat food. My total before coupons $42.64.

With manufacturer coupons
Store coupons
$10.00 off if I spend $40.00 or more in the pet department
Free with purchase items (2 cans of wet cat food and cat treat were free).

My total came to $15.96
Awesome right...but it didn't end there, E-bates sent me a $10.00 Target gift card when I made my first purchase through them.

My end total

$5.69

I want to stress something here, saving money like this is a part time job. And I don't buy items I do not use. I have certain stores that I shop at and I carry around a three ring binder and take it with me every time I leave the house.
I have allergies to all the garbage they put in food so I am very restricted to where I grocery shop at and what I buy. So most of my food savings is few and far between, but I do find some.
This savings at Target is a normal shopping trip for me. The trick is to shop sales only.
My coupons came from the news paper, coupons.com and Target.com (target has there own coupons) At certain stores like Target you can use a store coupon and a manufacturer for one item. This is where the extra savings comes in.
If your family likes a certain brand and you buy it often check out that company on the web, if they don't have coupons listed write them a letter explain why you like it so much and could they send you coupons. You wont believe what you might get. I recently contacted one of the very few restaurants that I could eat at. Not only did they UPS me $50.00 in gift cards, but they invited me and my children to the grand opening kick off party that is invite only. WOO HOO!

I will share my other hauls as I do them, so you can get an idea's of how to do this for yourself.
Good Luck and happy savings.

Now that I "think" I finally have my Blog up and running again...I can start sharing. And the first thing I want to start sharing is my Bedroom. I have been working on my room for awhile and am very proud of it.
So What's New in the Pink Rose room...
Here are some little trinket boxes I got from Hobby Lobby, they were at 50% off I think I wound up paying less than $4.00 for all of them.
Lucky Me, I got a $50.00 gift card for Hobby Lobby for Christmas, obviously someone knows I like the store. So what did I spend it on?

I really like the shabby look of the piece, but I must admit it was very cheaply made, the hangers in the back were all wonky, a hook is missing on the front (not sure what I am going to do about that) and overall it felt cheap. But I liked the way it looked and it gave me a place to put those little gifts the kids give me. Had it not been 50% off I would not have paid the $79.99 price tag. But at $39.95 and my gift certificate...I thought it was worth it.
I am always working on something new for my room...I like the idea of having handmade items, I think it adds to the charm. Right now I am working on some Embroidery pillow cases, I work on them at the same time for several reasons, first they get done at the same time and second I don't usually use the recommended colors and I might forget...hey it happens.
Sorry...I wish I would have thought of taking a photo sooner...but these things go fast.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cupcakes Recipe

Preheat over 350

Ingredients:
1 cup cooked or canned pumpkin
1/3 cup oil
3/4cup agave (or 1 cup sugar)
1/4 cup soy milk (or regular milk)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup chocolate chips

Mix together pumpkin, oil, agave, soy milk and vanilla. In another bowl mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Stir the flour mixture into the wet mixture by hand until wet. Don't over mix as it will make the cupcakes gummy. Stir in the chocolate chips.

In a cupcake pan with cupcake liners fill 2/3 full. Bake for 19-22 minutes. Or until toothpick comes out clean. Remove from pans and let cool completely before Icing.

Cinnamon Icing

Ingredients:
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4tablespoons butter melted
2tablespoon soy milk (or milk)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix the sugar and cinnamon together. Add the wet ingredients and stir well, so its nice and smooth. You can drizzle it on top or put it in a zip lock bag and snip off a tip and pipe it out.

Well I seem to be in a scarf mood right now...well Kind of.
First I wanted to make a hat that could also be a scarf, I'm not sure what you would call it a, "Harf" or maybe a "Scat?" Wait Scat wont work its poo and I don't want to call it poo.
Either way I am using one of my favorite yarns, the Denim line by Bernat I made the kids winter sweaters out of this a few years ago. It so soft and easy to work with.
Anyhow here is my Harf Scat in progress at about 3 feet in length.

The other scarf I have re-started several times and should have done it again...but I think I will turn my OOPS into a new pattern. It is the linen weave style of knitting At first I had a hard time noticing the pattern. And it kind of got flopped around, Then once I got to a certain point...and state of mind I fell in love with the look. The idea behind it is to use the little tidbits that you really cant use for much or to dwindle down your stash a bit. So I don't get so controlling and precise about it...ahem...like I would ever do that. I have one of the kids pick out the next yarn.

You can see my glitch where the yellow is but I am going to repeat the same colors and do the glitch again to make a border on each side...hopefully.

Have fun and keep on knitting.
Nutmeg has filled a space in our lives with her own unique personality. She likes to play allot and has her toys strewn from one end of the house to the other, for some reason I can get her to put them back in the basket. Nutmeg is a snuggler the first week she stayed on or next to me. To wake me up she will start at my foot and walk up my body to my face and nip my nose, she is lucky she's so cute. Alex cant seem to put her down, he is always petting, holding or playing with her and Trinity can get her to do things that our older cat would defiantly give us the displeased down the nose look at us.

As you can see we enjoy and love our new kitten

What a week! Usually the week of my birthday the post office will deposit a card or two in my mail box. But this Birthday the post office lost my Power Bill and my City Bill (Gas, Water, Trash) I paid with money orders last month. So you can imagine what I got from the Power Co. and the City just went ahead and turned off my water...Happy Birthday to me.
I spent the morning filling out paperwork to get my money back from Western Union...I wont see if for a month and I won't get the money back for 30 days UGH! Now I have to come up with two months worth of utility bills.

So after my craziness I rolled up my sleeves and did what anyone else would do...made Chili.

Chili is very frugal, you can make it last several days if you do it right. And I keep beans and Quorn (vegi meat) in the freezer. (beans are cheap and I buy several bags of Quorn when its on sale) First I will share my recipe. Then I will share how you can change it up. Granted at the end of the week everyone will be sick of chili, but there bellies will be filled and the water will get turned back on.

Vegetarian Chili
1 Large onion, diced very small
3 cloves of garlic
2 stalks of celery
1 green pepper
1 cup dried kidney beans (soak and pre cook save the juice from cooking them)
2 T Olive Oil
2 cups crushed tomatoes with juice
1/3 cup T.V.P (Textured Vegetable Protein) this is optional just makes it thicker
1 Bag Quarn Grounds (health food section freezer)
2 T Braggs Liquid Amino's
3 Bay Leaves
1 t basil
1 t cumin
1 t chili powder
1/2 t cloves
Hot sauce to taste

Saute the vegetables in the olive oil. Add everything else to the pot and bring to a boil. Turn stove to medium-low and let simmer the whole day.
This truly is the best vegetarian chili I have ever had and it fools the meat eaters.

OK to make Chili frugal do not just scoop out a big ladle of it. It wont go too far this way. You have to put it on or in something.

The first night I steam a big pot of rice, it go's in the bowl first. Then you top it with enough chili to flavor the rice. Then I set out the following items I usually have in the fridge.

Cheese
Jalapenos
Sour Cream
Olives
Shredded Coconut (this is very tasty)
Diced Tomatoes
Chopped Onion

The following meals can be made with the remaining chili

Chili-mac Made with Amy's Organic Mac and Cheese (just make the mac and stir in some of the chili)
Chili topped baked potatoes with a sprinkle of cheese
Nachos (offer sides as above)
Chili & Rice Burritos (just warm flour tortillas add the rice, chili and sides)
Taco salad made with chili instead of ground meat
Chili & Pasta

Frugal tips: Buy cheese in blocks and set it out with the shredder so everyone has to shred their own cheese (they wont use as much). I usually have all this stuff on hand, I buy it when its on sale and you can freeze Cheese and coconut.

I hope this helps stretch your dollars...and gets you through the rough times.

TaDa...I am so pleased with this rug and how it turned out. It looks like one of those old fashioned rag rugs my grandmother use to have. The rug is thick and squish...great to have in front of the sink, where I do allot of standing when I can. It will be easy to wash up too just take it outside and hose it down.
Even though the grocery bags and the Craft cord was bulky it was quick to knit. I am saving up my bags for another project. If you want to view more photos, get more information or purchase the project click the button below.

Well I am still working on the pattern for this Beanie, Some of the things I did on the blue one didn't turn out as I liked. I thought I would get fancy with the blue one and do a two color ribbing. It gives it a neat look but it doesn't have the give to fit snug around the face and it wanted to roll back on itself. So I added an I-cord around the face to prevent it. Also the bottom of the beanie wants to roll as well so I am adding an I-Cord to that as well.

Improvements on the pattern (burgundy and green one) are the basic K1 P1 ribbing and around the base of the Beanie I am using a seed stitch as a border so it wont roll. All in all I really like the pattern and how different it looks when you switch around the colors. I think I wll be happier with it when its blocked. Blocking always seems to work some sort of magic.

Since I have been at the dentist all week and am really groggy from pain meds, I should get them finished as I am just sitting around the house. Thats why this post is so utterly boring...me in a fog.

Happy Knitting Everyone, I hope to stop by and visit posted projects and leave a comment. I try to do it every Wednesday and Friday. I got to support my knitting buddies.
I know it looks strange but this is the coolest project I have ever created!

I cant wait till I'm done so I can share the finished product.

This project is made from recycled bags and it is the cushiest throw rug...I think just one more grocery store trip and I will have enough to finish it.

This is a great "Go -To" project, because you can only work on it when you have bags.

I will be sharing this on my Ravelry as soon as I am done and I will Link it here.

Now you know what to do with all those bags and you wont feel so guilty when you forget your fabric ones at home.
I have been playing with my scrap yarn and have come up with a Gnome Beanie for a Baby or Toddler. I really love how the pattern is turning out, blue and white always looks so fresh together...and this is six shades of blue.
Cant you just see a rosy cheeked dumpling in this...to bad mine are all grown up. OH well maybe I will do a giveaway.

Well these were a pain in the BLEEP but I am very proud and happy with the way they turned out.
Lets start with the dresser

BEFORE:

This was in bad need of a re-do you can see it here but the finished looked like mustard was smeared all over it. Then to top it off white spray paint was sprayed on the top and spattered all over the mirror. It took many scrapings and tedious sanding but I got the top nice and smooth.

AFTER:

I wish the lighting was better, but this is a nice warm pink. IT is hard to find a warm soft pink but I did it and I am very pleased with it. The white spray paint came off the mirror with a razor blade and my needle work looks great above it. The white frame (and the gold one you can see reflected in the dresser mirror) is next to be re-finished.

Now onto the Desk and Hutch, I drove by this on the side of the road on my way to take Trinity to Gymnastics. I liked the feminine shape.

BEFORE:

My Son thought I was crazy when I asked him to help me load this on the truck. But it had nice lines and was in good shape. Not as well made ad I would have liked but I could make this work.

AFTER:

As you can see it fits in perfectly in my girly Rose room. I decided to make this a creamy antique white, not wanting to go pink and make everything too matchy, matchy. I am on the hunt for drawer pulls. Originally on the hutch drawers were two nobs and plastic pulls on the desk drawers. I didn't like them at all. The trouble is the holes on the hutch are closer than the drawers on the desk. I also need to raise the hutch as it is too low for a computer. I have an idea in mind that I think will look great.

H:\HandmadeHomeker\Etsy\Blogsignaturebock.jpg
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08751383958801178016noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2277199513845265744.post-2938939148354669552013-04-01T22:41:00.003-04:002013-04-01T22:41:52.586-04:00Furniture Refinish

I have been busy, busy, busy. In-between everything I am working on my bedroom furniture. The bedroom suit is very old and out-dated. At one point someone took a can of white spray paint and sprayed the top of the dresser and side table, not even bothering to try not to get it on the mirror. Well, it was free.

The side table use to look like the dresser...YUCK! You can kind of see the white paint on the mirror.
Being as chicken as I am I started with the side table to see if I could live with the pink.

I couldn't get the dresser out in the garage fast enough after I saw how the side table turned out. The paint was Glidden Barely Blush in an Eggshell finish. I then topped it off with several coats of a Semi-Gloss shellac.
On my way to taking Trinity to Brownies I saw this sitting out front of a Thrift store

It is not as well made as the bedroom suit but it had the soft shape I wanted. The structure is sound but it was not well taken care of...someone taped the drawers shut, Sam carved and wrote their name several places on it. But I am thinking a nice Antique Cream color...I don't want to go with the soft pink...way too matchy matchy for me.

The bed to the suite is OK the mattress slides down from the headboard then my pillow slides down between the mattress and the headboard...total pain. Besides you really cant even see it, its in the first photo. I have another bed in the basement...solid wood. Once I have everything finished and my back stops hurting and I can walk again after sanding and painting the rest of the furniture I am going to tackle it.

The Knitting:

I know its hard to see my poncho it really looks like an afghan gone terribly wrong. You knit one side then put half on a holder. Knit the front..put it on the holder...go back to the other holder and kit the back...knit the front and back together finishing up on the other side. It is very easy just seems hard. Once finished I will share the pattern and a photo that doesn't look like a blob.

The books:

Book on CD: Seer of Shadows

By: AVI

The Author also wrote the Poppy series that my children and I enjoyed very much. Though this book was in the childrens section I would not advise that children listen to it. To me this was more a Teen story. It was well written but not one of my favorites...still I enjoy books on CD while knitting at night in bed before going to sleep.

The place is New York City. Horace Carpetine has been raised to believe in science and rationality. So as apprentice to Enoch Middleditch, a society photographer, he thinks of his trade as a scientific art. But when wealthy society matron Mrs. Frederick Von Macht orders a photographic portrait, strange things begin to happen.
Horace's first real photographs reveal a frightful likeness: it's the image of the Von Machts' dead daughter, Eleanora.
Pegg, the Von Machts' black servant girl, then leads him to the truth about who Eleanora really was and how she actually died. Joined in friendship, Pegg and Horace soon realize that his photographs are evoking both Eleanora's image and her ghost. Eleanora returns, a vengeful wraith intent on punishing those who abused her.

The Middle Moffat

By Elanor Estes

I adore Elanor Estes home town style books, the Moffats are one of my favorite families and I am happy that there are several to read. I like to read to my kids before bed (before I snuggle into a book on CD) and anything by Elanor Estes is always a popular choice in my house by both children. (13 & 8) You are always left feeling good.

Who is Jane Moffat, anyway? She isn't the youngest in the family, and she isn't the oldest-she is always just Jane. How boring. So Jane decides to become a figure of mystery ... the mysterious "Middle Moffat." But being in the middle is a lot harder than it looks.
In between not rescuing stray dogs, and losing and finding best friends, Jane must secretly look after the oldest inhabitant of Cranbury...so he can live to be one hundred. Between brushing her hair from her eyes and holding up her stockings, she has to help the girls' basketball team win the championship. And it falls to Jane-the only person in town with enough courage-to stand up to the frightful mechanical wizard, Wallie Bangs.
Jane is so busy keeping Cranbury in order that she barely has time to be plain old Jane. Sometimes the middle is the most exciting place of all.
