This is a very simple pattern you can have a whole hen house full in an afternoon.
MATERIALS
Finger weight yellow yarn
Finger weight red yarn
Size 1 needles
Darning needle
wool fleece for stuffing
INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 20 stitches
Knit all rows till you have a square
Cast off
Fold square in half corner to corner making a triangle
Sew up one side
Stuff firmly but leave some room for munipulating it into shape later on
Sew up other side
Weave your thread down to the tip(where you folded it and the two tips met)...this is where your base will be
Now pull you needle up straight through the center and pull making the bottom flatten out (it may pucker a bit and thats OK) and the top puckers in (this is the arch in the chickens back)
Fasten off your yarn and draw the ends in the chickens body to hide them. Manipulate the body so it will sit.
Pull on the tail to make it more chicken like.
Thread your darning needle with red. Sew some loops on the head and add a beak.

Adorable! Our chickens are laying eggs like crazy right now and when we stopped by our Tractor Supply store they were preparing for the baby chicks which means we'll also be incubating here on our farm soon.
I really should knit up a couple of chicks for my kids...and husband.

I made these simple chickens for Easter one year as gifts. Thanks for reminding me of them. I'll be whipping a few out for people this spring. Lovely.
